2015 North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) House
Demekia was a hard worker with a good job, terrific kids, and a housing problem. The house they lived in had asbestos tiles in the ceiling, water damage and mold throughout, the windows were painted shut, and the electrical output was iffy at best. So when a co-worker told Demekia about the Habitat home ownership program she was intrigued.
Demekia excelled at the financial literacy program. She is a natural-born leader with a positive outlook on life. Demekia organized her family and work lives to meet the sweat equity hour demands necessary to complete Habitat homeownership program because once she commits to something – she is All In.
Students from Hartwick College (NY), Illinois Institute of Technology (IL), and Waynesburg University (PA), helped build Demekia’s home as part of Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge. More than 70 students helped Demekia reach her dream of home ownership during their Spring Break.
Demekia’s family moved into their brand new home in May 2015. They are thrilled with their beautiful new home and appreciate Habitat for Humanity and the many volunteers who helped make their dreams a reality.
