ReStore Greensboro Initiative - Shop the ReStore June 16, 2018
We encourage all Habitat ReStores to join us the Saturday of Father’s Day Weekend (June 16th) for the ReStore Greensboro Initiative and dedicate a percentage of your sales (gross or net at your discretion) over that weekend to go to the rebuilding of the tornado-devastated area of Greensboro. Know that through this gift you will be a part of the transformation of one of the poorest areas in that city from devastation to something even better than imagined.
A message from HFHGG Executive Director, Maria Hanlin:
“As we begin the long road towards repairing damaged homes in East Greensboro, Habitat is awed and inspired with the countless people/churches/organizations across our city and state who have reached out to help with the devastation. Thank you. East Greensboro is one of the most vulnerable and poorest areas of our community where most of our hard-working Habitat homeowners live. There have been over 1,000 structures impacted, including 501 homes damaged and 27 homes completely destroyed. So many families have been displaced and finding affordable housing is almost impossible.
Habitat’s staff and volunteers have been on the ground from the start, helping with emergency response of putting tarps on roofs and cutting up trees, assisting in rehousing for displaced families, and providing staffing for the relief centers. We held donation drives at 3 locations, set up tornado relief information on our website, and sent our construction staff to help wherever needed even though it meant slowing down Habitat’s own build schedule.
The emergency phase of recovery is complete and now we begin the years long rebuilding phase. Habitat will help, along with Community Housing Solutions, to lead repair efforts for the homeowners who did not have insurance. Our goal is to take these devastated neighborhoods and make them better than before the tornadoes, better than we imagine it can be. Now that media attention has waned away, the real work of ministry begins. Thank you so much for your support through the ReStore Greensboro Initiative on June 16th!”
